I've built several computers over the years (desktop gaming builds) before finding this subreddit but I've been lurking here looking for ideas for an HTPC/NAS/home server. Before this, I stored all my media on my desktop and streamed to my TV through my laptop. My goal was to have a separate smaller PC connected to my HDTV for media playback/hosting and secondary usage as a storage server. I wanted to be able to watch my media (anime, HD movies, etc) from Plex (or any other player) without having to turn on my desktop at all. CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 I was originally going to go with the AMD A6-6400K (I wanted to try the APU system out). However, I found a special on the G3258 (was also considering the other non-overclockable models), and the slightly lower TDP (along with quicksync support - wont be using it as much but it will be nice to have in the long run) convinced me to stay with the Pentium. MOTHERBOARD: ASRock B85M-ITX Honestly just filtered Newegg search by price. The only thing I wanted was 4+ SATAIII ports which this filled out nicely.
I was hesitant on buying an 8-series motherboard since the G3258 needed the new BIOS update to function (at least from what I've read). But it seems that Newegg replenishes their stock relatively quickly, the board came with BIOS version 2. 00 (released in May, newest version is 2. 10). I was considering microATX or ATX for cost savings in the mobo portion, but because the case I got was miniITX didn't have much of a choice. RAM: Corsair XMS3 4gigs Not much to say here; again it was on special with the total defense bundle. G3258 officially supports DDR-1333 anyways, and I wasn't planning on overclocking. CASE: Cooler Master Elite 120 I was actually looking at the CM Elite 130 (better airflow and removable HDD cage) but hey can't pass up a good deal on a solid, older case. HDD Transcend 128GB: Overkill for an HTPC I know but I had it lying around since that Amazon flash sale last Black Friday. Might as well live with the faster boot times. WD Red 3TB: NAS drive. Was very lucky to get it on special at Tigerdirect (back when they had their $20 off 100 rebate) in combination with the AMEX $30 off 100 deal.
